The Best Compliment I Have Ever Received

The other day I had to take my dog to the veterinarian behaviorist (poor thing has generalized anxiety disorder. And no, I’m not kidding about that). Anyway, after our two hour meeting discussing medication (my dog is on the puppy version of prozac. Still not kidding) and other things, she asked me a simple question. Here’s our conversation.

“What college did you go to?”

“The College of New Jersey for undergrad and Monmouth University for grad school. Why?”

“Oh shoot, I would’ve pegged you for a Smith or Barnard girl for sure (i.e. Smith College or Barnard College).”

“Oh, really? Why is that?”

“Your personality just exudes power and confidence. It’s something you regularly see when you walk throughout a women’s college campus. You just seemed like you’d be a perfect fit!”

I exude power and confidence? Oh, please tell me more. I could get used to this kind of talk!

But in all seriousness, this is probably one of the best compliments I’ve ever gotten for a few reasons.

  1. Some of the best female leaders came from women’s colleges. “Graduates of women’s colleges comprise of more than 20% of women in Congress, and represent 30% of a Businessweek list of rising women in corporate America.” The fact that she would compare me to these up-and-coming women based solely on my personality and how I carry myself is actually an honor to me. Check out the whole article about this here.
  2. I like to know how others see me. It means so much that my perception of myself and people’s perception of me is the same. It reminds me of who I am when I hear others give compliments like this. While this sounds a little selfish, having others approval and responding positively to my personality is important to me. I’m glad that I seem to be on the right path.
  3. This is a testament to how I was raised and educated. To me, this type of compliment means that the people around me did something right. They helped me grow and provided me with an environment where I feel confident and proud of who I am and what I stand for. I am a strong woman who has made it through some of the worst events anyone could go through. Even through the worst though, my family and friends stuck by me and helped push me to be great. It’s clear that they did a lot of things very, very right.
  4. Compliments are just nice to hear. I like to be told nice things just as much as anyone else. Lay ‘em on me whenever you want!
Please feel free to say any of these things to me on a regular basis.

Regardless of why or why not I liked this compliment, this is a reminder that your personality and attitude will shine through wherever you’re at. I mean, the vet felt this way about me when I was busy telling her how my dog growls at nothing and is afraid of everything, for goodness sakes. If you’re being genuine, people will know and appreciate it. Just remember, you never know how someone will be able to help you in the future so always put your best foot forward. And work on portraying that strong, confident, and poised person that you are. Just make sure you don’t come across as arrogant instead. Others will see it, recognize it, and respect you for it. Now, go out there with your head held high and get some awesome compliments!

Now, it’s your turn! What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
